Saltwells wood was planted in the eighteenth century, by Lady Dudley, to hide the scars of the local coal mining.
There is an abundance of wildlife, such as Great and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Jay, Treecreeper, Nuthatch and Sparrowhawk and many others.
Along the walk you will come across the old Doulton Claypit with its spectacular cliffs showing the section of the Middle and Lower coal Measures, which was abandoned in the 1940's, and has now been taken over by Mother Nature.
From woodland to marsh, from hills to lakes, you will walk through a varied terrain and see many areas not seen from the road and surrounding suburbs.
