Although usually called the Titanic Memorial it was officially a memorial to the engine room stokers who went down with the ship in 1912 and extended to all merchant seamen lost in WW1. It was thought to be bad PR to have a monument to a ship which went down on it first voyage close to where so many embarked on sea voyages when the big liners operated out of Liverpool.
